The EMface submentum applicator treats the area under the chin and along the jawline: a soft double chin, a jawline that has started to blur, lax skin under the chin. It is cleared in the US for the appearance of lax tissue in the submental area, it adds about 20 minutes to a session, and nothing goes through the skin. What it does
The applicator sits under the chin and delivers the same two energies as the rest of EMface: synchronised radiofrequency warms the skin to the temperature at which it tightens and lays down new collagen, and HIFES contracts the muscle beneath so the area sits firmer. The result is a cleaner line from the chin to the angle of the jaw and less of the soft fullness under the chin. BTL describes it as helping the appearance of the jawline and double chin without surgery, needles or bruising.
What the study found
The study submitted for the US clearance followed 56 patients through four treatments, with checks at one and three months. 91% improved by at least one point on the standard aesthetic improvement scale and 82% showed a measurable reduction under the chin. Every patient reported being satisfied, the average pain score was under half a point out of ten, and no adverse events were recorded.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits a soft double chin and early laxity under the chin: skin and a little fullness, not a large fat pad. EMface does not remove a fat pad under the chin on its own; if that is what you have, the clinician will say so at the free consultation and plan a different treatment, with the submentum applicator afterwards if the skin needs tightening. The course
The submentum is treated in four sessions about a week apart, on its own or in the same visits as the forehead and cheeks, adding about 20 minutes to each. The main result shows six to twelve weeks after the last session, with the after photograph at three months, and it holds for around twelve months for most people in our experience; one session every three to six months keeps it. The skin under the chin is a little pink for ten to twenty minutes afterwards and you go straight back to work.
